Big Five Domain0–100 CONTINUOUS SPECTRUM

Open-Mindedness

Interest in ideas, abstract thinking, aesthetics, and novelty versus tangible and established practices.

0: Pragmatic & Focused50: Balanced Baseline100: Exploratory & Imaginative

* Scale scores reflect linear continuous measurement, not population percentiles. Neither end is morally superior.

Tradeoffs Across the Spectrum

Lower Range (0–40)

Pragmatic & Focused

Strengths & Advantages

  • Anchored in empirical reality and direct practical utility.
  • Mastery of established, reliable operational methods.
  • Values clear, actionable facts over speculative abstractions.

Tradeoffs & Friction Points

  • May resist valuable paradigm shifts or untested innovations.
  • Less comfortable with ambiguity or purely theoretical debates.
  • Can overlook subtle systemic patterns that cross traditional boundaries.
Higher Range (60–100)

Exploratory & Imaginative

Strengths & Advantages

  • Enjoys novel synthesis and exploring unfamiliar perspectives.
  • Comfortable with theoretical ambiguity and speculative thought.
  • Appreciates art, symbolism, and cross-disciplinary connections.

Tradeoffs & Friction Points

  • Can over-complicate straightforward, practical tasks.
  • May grow impatient with routine maintenance and proven processes.
  • Can chase conceptual tangents at the expense of tangible delivery.
DualLens Cross-Model Distinction

How Open-Mindedness Differs from the Type Lens

Nearest Type counterpart: N (Intuition) (SN).

While conventional 16-type tests often conflate these dimensions, empirical evidence shows they are correlated, not identical. For example, a person can possess a strong preference for logical decision criteria (Thinking) while maintaining high Agreeableness (warmth and empathy) in interpersonal interactions.

Measuring Open-Mindedness on a continuous 0–100 scale preserves nuanced gradations that forced binary letter choices obscure.

Common Misconceptions

Misconception: High Openness means higher general intelligence.

Reality: Openness reflects interest in ideas, abstract novelty, and aesthetic variety, not raw cognitive capacity or operational problem-solving ability.

Hierarchical Facet Subdivisions

In future releases, each broad domain will unpack into empirical facet subscales (e.g. BFI-2 architecture). For Open-Mindedness, the future facet bank will measure:
